Wavefront Object (OBJ)

The Wavefront OBJ format is a simple, widely supported 3D data format developed by Wavefront Technologies. It is primarily used for exchanging polygonal geometry (vertices, faces, normals, UVs) and material definitions and describes the geometric shape of an object but lacks scene graph information like hierarchy or animations.

🔍 See 3D Data Resources for details and definitions.

Extensions

  • .obj: Standard ASCII OBJ file containing geometry and material references.

Structure

Structure is resolved in instant3Dhub.

Geometry

Tesselation

Tesselated data is the only representation in OBJ files, consisting of vertices, faces, normals, and texture coordinates. Instant3Dhub supports this representation.

B-Rep

OBJ does not support B-Rep geometry, as it is primarily a mesh format.

PMI & Model Views

OBJ does not support PMI or Model Views.

Metadata

OBJ does not support metadata.
